Izegrim - Interview

Izegrim [Date of interview: April 30, 2008] Izegrim is the thrash band who play thrash / death metal hybrid with melodic plus with the female singer in front of the stage. Let 's get to know this band more from the interview with Jeroen, the guitarist of IZEGRIM!.

Hailz, Jeroen, how's your life in Netherlands? Jeroen | Izegrim: Hey Sorn, everything is going fine over here, thank you. A bit tired, we had a 3-days mini-tour with Hollenthon and Officium Triste. Yesterday (28 April) was our last date, so we had a big party till early in the morning! Now I'm stuck with a hangover from hell, but it is well worth it.

You guys backed from the European Tour with Flotsam&Jetsam and other bands on March 08, How do you feel? How's the responses from the audiences when you guys dash them with the music in "Tribute to Totalitarianism"? Jeroen | Izegrim: It was awesome! The whole package with Flotsam&Jetsam and our labelmates Non-Divine worked out exceptionally well. It was a really nice experience for us to play in Poland and Hungary. We had to play at the prestigious Metal Mania Festival in Poland (Megadeth, Overkill, Satiricon a.o.). It was a blast to see more than 1000 metalmaniacs going bezerk, despite the early time we had to play (at 11:15!!!). The overall response during the tour was great; we've made a lot of new fans.

Let's talk about your new album "Tribute to Totalitarianism", you wanna send some messages to the dictators? Why's "Tribute to Totalitarianism"? And in the lyric, what is it about? Jeroen | Izegrim: Nope, we don't want to send any message what so ever. The whole cd is written as a concept-album. Our drummer (Joep) is responsible for all the lyrics on the cd. It's a story about how the world today is formed by events in the past and will influence events in the future. It's a theory that Joep turned into a fictional yet realistic concept. The whole album is narration of a traumatized nation. However we don't mention this certain nation once in our lyrics, you will understand that it's about the USA. Militarism and patriotism walk hand in hand with each other, and that is of course an excellent basis for a totalitarian state. George Orwell described this in his book '1984'.

You guys absence for five years after your album "Guidelines for Genocide" released in 2002. Why you use the long time to ripen this new album? Jeroen | Izegrim: Well, it was not really a matter of ripen the album. During the writing process, our guitar player Carsten left us to focus on his duty as a keyboard player in The Monolith Deathcult. We had to re-arrange some songs because we wanted to continue as a 4-piece band. However, we missed the second guitar player, so after a year we had to find ourselves a new recruit. Bart is doing a great job and even wrote some new material. And trust me, you don't have to wait another five years before we release our third cd. Ha ha ha! We're currently writing new material.

What do you think when the metalheads see you guys have female in front the band and compare the style of Krisz (Vocal) with Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy)? Jeroen | Izegrim: We're getting used to it. It is however a bit annoying to hear the comparison with Arch Enemy over and over again, just because we have a female grunter. I'm not a guitar player like the Amotts. I don't have to show off my skills in every song and squeeze (at least) 3 solo's in every song. We don't see much similarity with AE, other than a woman on vocals.

How come the chance that you get the agreement with Rusty Cage Record in the early of 2008? Jeroen | Izegrim: We wanted to take Izegrim to the next level. In these days you really need a record company, at least for our plans. So we've sent our cd to several record companies. Rusty Cage turned out to be the best partner for us. These guys are musicians themselves; they know what's going on in a band. It turned out to be a very fruitful alliance.

Now, what's your plan? Have some thrash commandos world tour? Jeroen | Izegrim: Ha ha ha that would be nice! We've got to do on the summer festivals in this year, and there are some big plans for October or November (keep your eyes on our website for more information that will be revealed soon). At this moment, we don't have any plans to do a world tour.

Do you have something to say to metalheads who read this interview? Talk about your stuffs, if some metalheads wanna support your band, how should they do? Jeroen | Izegrim: First of all, let me thank you Sorn, for the interest and support in Izegrim. It's really appreciated. It would be nice to hear some reactions from the metalheads in Thailand, what they think of our new cd. It's always cool to get some response. You can order the cd through our site at www.izegrim.nl. Further instructions can be found there. Thanks, cheers and goodbye!
